Volvo didn't have an entry in this segment of compact and not-quite-mid-size crossovers until just a few years ago, but it got this one right on first arrival.
And although the Volvo badge might not have quite the luster of German luxury legends, it matches up solidly against the BMW X3 and Audi Q5, as well as the Land Rover LR2, Acura RDX, and Infiniti EX35.
The BMW X3 was much improved in its latest iteration, with a far better interior and smoother ride; although packaging remains quite tight.
The Audi Q5 also feels a bit smaller inside, although its four-cylinder engine is very fuel-efficient and it handles better than the XC60.
The Acura RDX makes a major about-face for 2013 with a new V-6 engine and more conservative interior feel replacing the peaky turbo and techno-infused cabin look of the last generation.
The Infiniti EX35 takes the all-wheel-drive version of the handsome G37 sedan, gives it a sexy rear end, and mostly forgets about utility in the name of crisp handling.
Finally, the Land Rover LR2 is worth considering, though it's more of an off-road-focused take on a family crossover.
