2012 Volvo C70 vs. Its Competition

The 2012 Volvo C70 stands on its own as a somewhat unusual combination of elements: front-wheel drive, a turbocharged five-cylinder engine, and luxury folding hardtop packaging.

The competition avoids one or more of these features, and consequently each has a slightly different character. The 2012 Lexus IS 250C, for example, sports a naturally-aspirated 2.5-liter V-6 that's a little less powerful but just as fuel efficient as the C70's turbocharged engine.

The Lexus is also priced just below the C70, making it a potential value buy--yet still fully within the luxury convertible realm. The 2012 Infiniti G37 Convertible, on the other hand, packs much more punch with its 325-horsepower 3.7-liter V-6 engine, yet still secures similar fuel economy at 17/25 mpg.

The Infiniti is also available with a six-speed manual transmission, an arguably more attractive exterior, and an equally refined interior.

It does cost about 15 percent more, however. Finally, we have the 2012 BMW 3-Series convertibles.

Available in 328i, 335i and 335is trims, the 3-Series offers a choice between a naturally-aspirated inline-six cylinder, a turbo variant, and a very sporty twin-turbo model.

All of the 3-Series convertibles are more powerful, better-handling, rear-wheel-drive, and among the most attractive hardtop convertibles on the market.

They are, however, even more expensive than the Infiniti convertible, perhaps proving the maxim "you get what you pay for."

Quick Specs
With a healthy dash of Scandinavian style and Volvo's excellent reputation for safety, the 2012 C70 makes a solid all-around choice for a hardtop convertible.
The 2012 BMW 3-Series delivers the class-leading sport-sedan performance and handling enthusiasts have come to expect, yet it makes substantial improvements in fuel-efficiency, active safety, and connectivity.
The Infiniti G37 Convertible doesn't suffer the usual styling compromises, but it's a little less exciting to drive than its Coupe cousin.
The 2012 Lexus IS 250C strikes a good middle ground between racy roadsters and luxury convertible cruisers, but its sluggish powertrain performance will be a deal-breaker for many.
