2016 Volkswagen Tiguan vs. Its Competition

2015 Volkswagen Tiguan
Kirk Bell Kirk Bell Senior Editor

While the Tiguan may not be as stylish, fuel-efficient, or value-oriented as some of the other compact crossovers in its class, its superior fit and finish and brand appeal–as well as its refined performance–provide a nice balance of attributes.

Many of its competitors keep styling on the conservative side, too.

The Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V play it safe in both look and feel and lack performance but offer more utility, modern features, and reliability.

The Ford Escape is one of the more stylish options in the bunch, and it offers several engines with better fuel economy and more in-car technology than most of its competitors.

The Mazda CX-5 is an excellent combination of sporty moves, excellent fuel economy, and crossover space.

The new Kia Sportage includes a lot of standard equipment, and offers far more safety features than the Tiguan.

Quick Specs
7.0
While it's not as fun as other VWs and the old design leaves it behind in terms of safety, technology and fuel economy, the 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan delivers on most of the important small-crossover promises.
7.8
The 2016 Ford Escape gives up a little comfort and utility in its quest to be the most exciting crossover SUV to drive.
8.0
The 2016 Honda CR-V has its priorities in the right place, with lots of space and features—but performance takes a back seat.
7.4
The 2016 Kia Sportage offers good looks, a quality interior, and the fun of available turbocharged power, but it is small inside and it's falling behind in safety ratings.
8.0
The 2016 Mazda CX-5 is one of the more athletic crossovers; high gas mileage and high style just add to the value.
7.6
The 2016 Toyota RAV4 is a competent crossover utility with a new Hybrid model this year, updated safety systems, and lots of interior space.
