2014 Volkswagen Tiguan vs. Its Competition

While the Tiguan may not be as stylish, fuel-efficient or value-oriented as some of the other compact crossovers in its class, its superior fit and finish and brand appeal–as well as its refined performance–make it an enjoyable car to own.

Many of its competitors keep styling on the conservative side, too.

The Honda CR-V was redesigned in 2012, but plays it safe in look and feel.

It has a clever second-row mechanism, but lacks the VW's performance.

The Toyota RAV4 debuted with a new design last year, dropping its hatch-mounted spare tire for a stylish exterior and modern technology inside.

Chevrolet's Equinox is a little larger than the Tiguan, but it also offers good fuel economy and ride comfort.

The Ford Escape is one of the more attractive options in the bunch, and it offers better fuel economy and in-car technology than most of the competitors.

The Kia Sportage is also a more affordable option than the Tiguan, though it lacks many of the refinements found in the VW.

Quick Specs
The 2014 Volkswagen Tiguan offers just about everything a compact crossover should, though its a little conservative in style and feel.
The 2014 Chevrolet Equinox is every bit as solid, spacious, and well-equipped as cost-conscious families could expect -- and far more quiet and refined than many other models without a luxury badge.
With authentically athletic looks and performance balancing out good passenger space, cargo versatility, and loads of high-tech features, the 2014 Ford Escape is attractive to a wide range of buyers.
The 2014 Honda CR-V isn't exactly sprightly, but it nails efficiency on a few levels and finally brings more features to the family-wagon fight.
With up to 260 horsepower on tap and styling that's suitably athletic, the 2014 Kia Sportage shows that practical compact crossover wagons don't need to be so stodgy.
The 2014 Toyota RAV4 is sensible and spacious; but if driving fun is a priority, you can do better.
