2016 Volkswagen CC vs. Its Competition

2015 Volkswagen CC
Martin Padgett Martin Padgett Editorial Director

The 2015 Volkswagen CC's rivals include moderately priced cars that we'd call "near-luxury." The Audi A4 is set for a complete redesign in 2017; the current model has some of the same issues as the CC, with rear-seat room offsetting its dynamic driving feel.

The Volvo S60 is also somewhat sportier to drive than the CC, although it doesn't feel all that much more luxurious.

The Acura TLX is another good alternative and is available with a performance-oriented all-wheel-drive system.

The Lincoln MKZ offers flat handling and more interior space than the CC, but interior trim can seem dreadfully plain.

Finally, the Nissan Maxima may be the closest to the CC in spirit; it's also a dressed-up, more fashionable sedan based on a mainstream one (the Altima, for Nissan)--and its newest shape is a dramatic, exciting spin on the familiar mechanicals underneath.

Quick Specs
7.8
The 2016 Volkswagen CC splits the difference between sleek coupe lines and four-door convenience—it's a grown-up compromise.
8.2
The 2016 Acura TLX is light on luxury feel, but it has great interior space, lots of technology, and in its base version, supremely enjoyable performance and handling.
8.2
The 2016 Audi A4 is still a handsome, strong competitor with solid fuel economy and good power from its lone engine, even as the current generation comes to a close.
8.6
The 2016 Lincoln MKZ is missing some heritage, but this luxury sedan is no longer missing the sportier new direction that could do this brand some good.
8.6
The 2016 Nissan Maxima locks in an arresting shape and charming front-drive road manners, in its quest to distance itself from the Altima.
8.6
Already appealing for its good looks and outstanding safety ratings, the 2016 Volvo S60 grows in interesting ways with the long-wheelbase Inscription and Cross Country soft off-roader.
