2017 Volkswagen Beetle vs. Its Competition

2017 Volkswagen Beetle

The Beetle doesn't sit comfortably in any one genre, spanning coupe, hatchback, and convertible competition with its unique form.

Its most natural competitor is certainly the Mini Cooper, which is available in a far wider range of models with many customizable options.

But the VW is cheaper and certainly has some quirky style of its own.

The Nissan Juke may have four doors, but its rear seat is tight, so it's a good rival for the Beetle.

If you're set on a VW, you owe it to yourself to look across the showroom at the Volkswagen Golf and GTI lineup, which is far more modern and sophisticated than the Beetle without being much pricier.

And we're also throwing in the Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ twins on account of their value pricing, but they're a lot sportier than the Beetle.

Quick Specs
A versatile, retro throwback, the Volkswagen Beetle offers a decent value but not a lot of high-tech features... kind of like the original.
The 2017 Nissan Juke is best considered as the sportiest pick among subcompact crossovers, but it does come at a price.
The 2017 Subaru BRZ is a great-handling sports car with big value for the dollar; it's just not very fast.
The 2017 Toyota 86 isn't about power, but it is about fun, and it has just enough creature comforts to make it livable as a daily driver.
There's a Golf for nearly every taste and need—Golf, Golf GTI, Golf SportWagen— and don't forget about the EV eGolf, which is very balanced and fun to drive.
The 2017 Mini Cooper is still one of the most fun cars to drive on the road today.
