2016 Toyota Tundra vs. Its Competition

The Toyota Tundra comes in enough flavors to suit most needs, but its domestic competition crushes it in sheer choice of powertrains, body styles, bed lengths, and utility features.

The Ford F-150 is the feature killer: its aluminum body hasn't necessarily dropped much weight or boosted performance in a big way, but it's replete with the latest truck and safety technology.

GM's Sierra and Silverado models were new for 2014, and they offer excellent V-6 versions, strong V-8s, big towing numbers, and luxury models with features like adaptive suspensions.

The Ram 1500 is maybe the swankiest truck of the bunch, with choices of HEMI V-8s, V-6s, and turbodiesels accenting its sharp styling and beautiful interiors. The Nissan Titan is on the cusp of a new generation; a new XD model has been launched, with heavy-duty towing capacity and a hefty turbodiesel engine, with the rest of the lineup coming in 2016.

Quick Specs
The 2016 Toyota Tundra has authentic truck talent, but ultimately its powertrain choices, fuel economy, and configurations are limited, compared to domestic rivals.
The 2016 Chevrolet Silverado takes a traditional truck path but counters that with a comfortable, refined interior and a mother lode of technology.
The 2016 Ford F-150, fresh off a transformation that made it leaner yet much-improved in most ways, gets new Sync 3 infotainment and trailer-backup wizardry.
Rugged, handsome simplicity sums up the attraction of the 2016 GMC Sierra, which charms in many ways and doesn't overcomplicate in any.
The 2016 Nissan Titan XD is a smart pick for semi-heavy pulling power, but if you rarely or never tow big trailers, you're better served by a light-duty pickup.
The 2016 Ram 1500 will win over full-size truck buyers looking for a diesel offering and an opulent interior, but safety scores need improvement.
