2018 Toyota Tacoma vs. Its Competition

2018 Toyota Tacoma
Aaron Cole Aaron Cole Managing Editor

The elephant in the room is the coming Ford Ranger, which will add another mid-size pickup to the growing fray.

For now, the Tacoma mostly competes with the Chevy Colorado/GMC Canyon twins that are more refined, with an available turbodiesel, and are largely more comfortable.

If the Tacoma wins anywhere, it’s in brand loyalty and outre style.

The Honda Ridgeline is a brute-force logician: it’s comfortable and capable, but largely anonymous.

The Nissan Frontier is the oldest competitor, but its low price tempts many buyers and it’s almost old enough to be retro-cool now.

Quick Specs
5.8
The 2018 Toyota Tacoma is a mid-size pickup with the right-sized attitude: it’s nimble off road, capable, and just enough truck for many buyers.
5.8
The 2019 Ford Ranger isn’t a revival, it’s a comprehensive rethink.
6.0
The 2018 Chevrolet Colorado can be whatever you need it to be: in-town runabout, suburban slogger, or off-road racing champion.
6.0
The 2018 GMC Canyon is a solid, highly recommended choice among mid-size pickups for its terrific powertrains, comfortable interior, and refined demeanor.
7.5
The 2018 Honda Ridgeline is the most comfortable truck you can drive today. It has the capability that many casual buyers want, but it’s not the choice for heavy duty users.
4.0
The 2018 Nissan Frontier is a good, basic truck, but there are far more modern options for not too much more.
