2017 Toyota Tacoma vs. Its Competition

General Motors' GMC Canyon and Chevrolet Colorado twins have really given the Toyota Tacoma a run for its money.

The GMC and Chevy both offer a more fuel efficient turbodiesel engine, and the Canyon's new Denali trim level brings new luxuries to this segment.

But you'll pay a price for a so-equipped Canyon or Colorado.

The Nissan Frontier, meanwhile, is definitely the segment's "vintage" competitor, boasting a design that's more than a decade old and hasn't really been updated.

For the way most people use their trucks—as crossovers with an open bed—the Honda Ridgeline excels.

It won't tow or go off road as well as the other mid-size trucks, but if you don't need that capability, it could be the best choice.
