2022 Toyota Prius vs. Its Competition

The Toyota Prius is a hybrid trailblazer, and while it wasn’t technically the first hybrid in the U.S.

market it’s been the most enduring.

The Hyundai Ioniq has been the most direct challenger to the Prius and closely rivals its fuel economy ratings—beating them in some respects.

The Honda Insight, the Prius’ original rival, has been reconstituted as a suave hybrid sedan.

If the design statement of the Prius is too much, the Corolla Hybrid puts essentially the same system under the hood of a more ordinary-looking sedan.

The Kia Niro is another hybrid alternative within a taller crossover shape—still hitting 50 mpg combined in its base version.

And the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid now outsells the Prius, following the form that many American families now prefer.
