2018 Toyota Highlander vs. Its Competition

2018 Toyota Highlander
Andrew Ganz Andrew Ganz Senior Editor

There may not be a more competitive segment than three-row crossover SUVs; there’s one for every garage.

The newest players here are the Volkswagen Atlas and Chevrolet Traverse.

VW’s effort is enormous but doesn’t drive like it, although its fuel economy and downmarket interior leave a little to be desired.

The Chevy goes in the opposite direction with a luxurious feel inside and a somewhat tight third row.

The Ford Explorer is a favorite among buyers; it’s likable but starting to feel dated and its safety record is subpar at best.

The Nissan Pathfinder offers a great value and drives well, while the Honda Pilot does just about everything with grace.

Happy shopping!

Quick Specs
6.8
The 2018 Toyota Highlander delivers much of what families want in a three-row crossover at a reasonable price; the Highlander Hybrid is icing on the cake.
7.4
A new powertrain and crisp (but conservative) styling mean the Traverse is once again a contender in the three-row crossover race.
6.7
The 2018 Ford Explorer has pulled off a graceful transition from clumsy off-roader to genteel family wagon.
7.3
The 2018 Honda Pilot ranks among the very best three-row crossover SUVs; it’s all about the packaging.
6.5
The 2018 Nissan Pathfinder should be on the list for shoppers looking for a large crossover. The Pathfinder is highly functional, but not entirely interesting.
6.5
The 2018 Volkswagen Atlas does little wrong, but it's light on personality and a little low-rent inside—and it guzzles fuel. It's worth a look, but mostly rivals do more for less.
