2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser vs. Its Competition

The Toyota FJ Cruiser's singular focus on off-road style narrows the field of competitors to a handful of vehicles.

The Jeep Wrangler is the closest in its arena: it also makes noticeable sacrifices in city ride and handling in the name of trail ability, but it's become a much better-performing vehicle with recent interior upgrades and the new Pentastar V-6.

Those thinking about doing occasional off-roading, but needing a real backseat for occasional longer trips, should consider the Toyota 4Runner, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Nissan Xterra.

Of those, the Grand Cherokee was just redesigned two years ago, and has a much more refined and sophisticated feel overall, while the 4Runner is surprisingly well rounded considering its more traditional truck look and feel.

Compared to the FJ, the Nissan Xterra has a roomier, more versatile interior, although the Toyota feels better-detailed throughout the cabin.

Quick Specs
The 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser pairs tough trail-ready hardware with modern features and fab styling--but it's not for families or commuters.
The 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee adds great turbodiesel fuel economy to a resume already blushing with talent.
The 2014 Jeep Wrangler can endure a daily commute, but it's truly happiest when it's off-road.
The 2014 Nissan Xterra doesn't have many extras available, but it does accomplish exactly what a weekend warrior would want–plus it can go just about anywhere.
The 2014 Toyota 4Runner's brawny looks don't fit the crossover mold, but neither do its off-road talents, either.
The 2013 Toyota 4Runner is just as brawny as it looks off-road, yet much better than you'd probably suspect on the highway.
