2018 Toyota 86 vs. Its Competition

Aaron Cole Aaron Cole Managing Editor

The 2018 Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ are mechanically related, and mostly identical under the sheet metal.

This year, Subaru now offers a track-focused version, the tS, that could appeal to weekend warriors willing to sacrifice some comfort for better performance.

The Volkswagen GTI is another entry sports car, albeit with a much different drivetrain and practical hatchback body.

The Hyundai Veloster is a small hatchback with sporty ideas, but it lacks the rear-wheel-drive architecture that makes the 86 worthwhile.

The Nissan 370Z has all of the elements of the 86: two doors, rear-drive, and manual transmission.

It’s relatively aged compared to the 86, but has more power.

The Camaro offers a turbo-4 and bigger back seat, but compromised visibility at the service of style.
