2017 Toyota 4Runner vs. Its Competition

A decade ago, the 4Runner's list of rivals was a mile long.

Today, it's really just the Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The Wrangler bests the 4Runner's off-road ability, but perhaps not enough to justify its sloppy handling, loud cabin, and high price tag for many buyers.

On the other hand, the Jeep Grand Cherokee gives up some four-wheeling capability but rewards drivers with a better ride and handling setup than in the 4Runner.

The Toyota's list of rag-tag rivals moves next into the Subaru Outback, with its tall-wagon stance, good fuel economy, and surprising dirt road ability.

The Toyota Tacoma is a natural cross-showroom rival to the 4Runner; it's more modern, but also less comfortable.

And then there's the Lexus GX 460.

Lower-spec versions offer much of the Toyota's capability with an added dose of luxury for not that much more than a range-topping 4Runner.
