If you need the capacity to handle demanding off-roading or plan to tow something large, the Jeep Liberty is a better choice, although its interior is surprisingly cramped.

As with the Grand Vitara, the RAV4, Sportage, and Escape all offer carlike handling.

If you need seven seats, the Toyota RAV4 is one of the few compact crossovers to offer them-though the two rear seats are minimal.

And none of those offers particularly high towing ability.

The RAV4 also shares the Grand Vitara's annoying tail-mounted spare, which interferes with cargo loading and mildly handicaps visibility.

The 2010 Suzuki Grand Vitara does, however, offer good value for money.

Quick Specs
6.8
The 2010 Suzuki Grand Vitara offers real off-road ability and is maneuverable in town, but there are few other reasons to choose it.
7.6
Don’t let the 2010 Ford Escape’s boxy, old-school appearance turn you off; the Escape is a solid, fuel-efficient choice for city-dwelling families.
7.0
The 2010 Jeep Liberty is at home on the trail—but not so much in suburban driveways or city streets.
6.6
Value—not trend-setting design or class-leading performance—is the reason to keep the 2010 Kia Sportage on your list.
7.4
Though it might wear a spare tire on its tail like the hard-core SUVs of yore, don't let that throw you off. The 2010 Toyota RAV4 is actually a practical, fuel-efficient choice for frugal families on the go.
