There’s nothing on the market like the WRX, but the Honda Civic Si and Type R provide similar thrills in very different packages.
The Civic Si is the second-most balanced front-wheel-drive car on the market, and it comes loaded with features for the money.
The Type R is the most-balanced front-drive car you’ll find, plus it’s righteously quick.
The downside? It makes the WRX look subtle and stylish.
VW’s GTI is a refined thrill machine, but a new model is due likely later this year, so either insist on a big discount or wait it out.
An all-wheel-drive Golf R may happen again, but VW hasn’t said.
The Mazda 3 delivers excellent balance and good fuel economy, and it’s available with all-wheel drive.
It’s not nearly as sporty as the WRX, though.
Hyundai’s Elantra GT makes a good budget choice with its punchy turbo power and comfortable interior, too.
The smaller three-door hatchback Veloster and Veloster N are smoother, smaller, and tighter, but lack room for four.
