2017 Subaru Outback vs. Its Competition

2017 Subaru Outback
Aaron Cole Aaron Cole Managing Editor

Many competitors to the Subaru Outback have come and gone during the wagon's three decades on sale.

The Audi Allroad has been around for most of it (although in two different configurations) and can out point the Outback on interior amenities, if you're willing to pay the price.

Ford's Explorer has the benefit of three rows of seating, but doesn't offer the same kind of advanced safety as the Outback.

Interestingly, the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Subaru Outback have the same ground clearance—8.7 inches—but the Grand Cherokee offers a better variety of trims and options.

Volvo's XC70 and XC60 are quality competitors, but start well above the Outback's base $25,000 price—in the case of the XC70, about $11,000 more.

Quick Specs
8.0
The 2017 Subaru Outback is a worthy competitor to many SUVs on capability alone—factor in price and it should be a no-brainer.
6.7
The 2017 Ford Explorer adds a sport appearance package and Sync 3, both of which are important to today's SUV buyers.
7.7
The 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a benchmark SUV; it's a luxury vehicle, a talented off-roader, a scalding-hot track runner, and a family wagon extraordinaire.
7.0
The 2017 Volvo XC60 is a near-luxury contender at near-luxury prices. Its safety might be its biggest strong suit, which it rightly deserves.
The 2016 Volvo XC70 Cross Country is the brand's last wagon-based crossover, a tough and utilitarian vehicle—but despite new fuel-efficient powertrains, the design is starting to show its age.
