While the 2014 Subaru Legacy sits squarely in the mid-size sedan segment, its sporty nature, standard all-wheel drive, and practical appeal put it up against the livelier end of the range, including the Ford Fusion, Mazda 6, and Volkswagen Passat.
The all-new Mazda 6 is a stylish, impressive, and fuel-efficient vehicle, while the Passat has moved toward the mainstream in its latest model.
Both of those cars will offer a diesel engine that beats the Legacy's fuel-economy ratings, but neither has all-wheel drive, even as an option.
That applies to the mainstream Toyota Camry and Honda Accord as well.
With an all-new Accord, Altima, and Fusion last year, and a new Camry in 2012, the Legacy is now one of the oldest cars in the segment.
The only all-wheel-drive competitor is a high-end Ford Fusion, requiring its most powerful four-cylinder engine, but that combination gets pricey fast.
The Legacy remains a better value, if perhaps a somewhat staid one by this year's standards.
