2013 Subaru Impreza vs. Its Competition

2013 Subaru Impreza

The 2013 Subaru Impreza used to be a niche model off in left field, with a narrow but loyal appeal toward crunchy types, but it's now closer to the middle of the compact segment, competing against high-volume models like the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Chevrolet Cruze, and Ford Focus.

Against the Civic and the Corolla, the Impreza feels much more appealing, with better driving manners as well as a better feature set and standard all-wheel drive.

The Cruze however has a somewhat more comfortable interior, while the Focus still strikes us as much more stylish.

The Mazda3 is another worthy rival, and one of the few small-car models that's more engaging and fun-to-drive than the Impreza--at least until the roads turn slippery.

The Kia Forte is a lower-priced alternative that still has a lot of style and personality, while the Volkswagen Golf and Jetta have clean styling and top-notch refinement but don't offer all-wheel drive.

However a high-mileage TDI clean-diesel engine is available on the VW models.

Quick Specs
7.8
The 2013 Impreza retains the Subaru hallmarks of standard all-wheel drive, practicality, and durability, while packing in more features for the money—and it looks good doing it.
8.4
Civic who? Corolla what? The Hyundai Elantra's one of the new standard bearers in the compact class, with 38-mpg fuel economy, better safety, and class-leading standard features.
7.4
It's a family affair: the Kia Forte lineup is more comfortable, more eager, and better finished than ever, and a step up from what its sticker price might suggest.
8.2
The 2013 Mazda 3 drives with a lot more sophistication and verve than you might expect for a small car this affordable, practical, and fuel-efficient.
7.8
The 2013 Volkswagen Golf masterfully balances frisky performance, fuel-efficiency, and refinement in its GTI and even TDI editions, but as such it's priced as a premium model.
