2011 Saab 9-5 vs. Its Competition

2011 Saab 9-5
Bengt Halvorson Bengt Halvorson Deputy Editor

Rivals for the Saab 9-5 span a wide range, from the design savvy but otherwise-ordinary Nissan Maxima through to conservative luxury stalwarts like the Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

Volvo's S80 sedan is perhaps the top rival for the 9-5 as it's from Saab's domestic (Swedish) rival brand; but the two have quite a different design theme and driving feel, with the Volvo being brighter and airier and the Saab, at least up next to the Volvo, feeling more Germanic and serious.

The Acura RL is actually more expensive than the 9-5 Aero and doesn't have nearly as much design panache or personality.

Same goes for the Hyundai Genesis, which is smooth and responsive but design-wise remarkably boring compared to the 9-5.

Otherwise, the Audi A6 would be a top rival, but an all-new A6 is expected for 2012.

Quick Specs
The 2011 9-5 could be Saab's saving grace; it's a classy, comfortable, and well-designed flagship, with a lot more character than most luxury sport sedans.
The 2011 Acura RL lives up to its flagship status in the Acura lineup with top-notch tech features and long-haul comfort, but charm comes up missing.
If you can do without a luxury logo, the 2011 Hyundai Genesis provides performance, features, and comfort—including impressive detailing—to match premium-brand sedans costing much more.
The 2011 Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan swings to the masculine side of the pendulum and sharpens its driving appeal in the process.
The 2011 Nissan Maxima is no longer primarily a sport sedan; think of it as comfortable and refined first, with its sportiness a bonus, and you’ll be happy.
The 2011 Volvo S80 is safe and secure, fashion-forward, and just right for affluent families.
