2016 Porsche Macan vs. Its Competition

2017 Porsche Macan GTS
Martin Padgett Martin Padgett Editorial Director

With the Macan, Porsche drills into lower-priced, smaller-sized SUV territory—in direct conflict with some of its corporate cousins and some established players.

Though it's a size class larger than the Macan, the Mercedes GLE-Class is more of an all-around player, with a frugal diesel edition and a blazing AMG range-topper.

BMW's X3 has grown into a more mid-sized proposition, but twin-turbo six-cylinder models are amazingly quick, and despite the size, the X3 feels nimble, even with all-wheel drive.

The Audi Q5 is both of those things: it's near the end of its life cycle, but has lovely lines and a solid, quick-footed appeal that's sure to carry over to the new model coming in 2017.

The Infiniti QX70 is the former FX, and its tortoise-like shape is entirely subverted by its effortlessly quick V-8, which is also unfortunately rather thirsty.

Quick Specs
The 2016 Porsche Macan has almost all the rippling, muscular performance of the bigger Cayenne, in a slightly more compact, slightly less expensive package.
The 2016 Audi Q5 offers one of the greatest range of powertrain choices in its class, ensuring that almost anyone can find a version of this handsome small crossover to fit their tastes.
The stylish 2016 BMW X3 skips the ruggedness thing entirely and instead succeeds in being one of the sportiest and tech-loaded yet fuel-efficient compact crossovers.
Though aging, the 2016 Infiniti QX70 still offers an appealing mix of sporty dynamics, coupe-like looks, and luxurious appointments.
The M-Class gets a new lease on luxury-crossover life as the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class—and it's joined by a swoopy new Coupe variant.
The 2016 Porsche Cayenne offers more than enough on-the-road (or on-the-track) performance to satisfy enthusiast cravings, and it's likely to surprise and delight with its versatility and ruggedness.
