2020 Porsche Cayenne vs. Its Competition

The Cayenne kicked off the performance-luxury-SUV segment in a way the old GMC Typhoon simply couldn’t.

A raft of competitors have since showed up, but few can challenge the overwhelmingly well-rounded excellence of the Porsche.

They’ll nearly all be cheaper, however. The only one that goes toe-to-toe in pricing is the Range Rover Sport.

This is the British icon with a shape nearly as recognizable as that of a Jeep Wrangler.

Opt for the available V-8 and you’ll get performance and luxury that can rival the Porsche, but you’ll also get a hefty six-figure price tag.

That won’t be the case with the related Range Rover Velar, but don’t expect the same level of performance from this stylish piece as the classic Range Rover. That’s the British competition, but Porsche’s German rivals are also gunning for Cayenne territory.

Their weaponry? The Mercedes-Benz GLE63 and BMW X5 M.

Both of these are fast, heavy, and luxurious, though they fall just shy of the overall performance excellence boasted by the Porsche.

If you want something with an American badge, there’s only option on the table: the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk.

With 707 horsepower, it’s got the grunt to run with the best of these hot-blooded foreigners.

Just don’t expect the most premium interior trimmings.
