2017 Nissan Rogue vs. Its Competition

2017 Nissan Rogue SV Midnight Edition
Martin Padgett Martin Padgett Editorial Director

The Nissan Rogue has a comfortable cabin with a small but unique third row.

It rides nicely but lacks any sporty pretense.

The Toyota RAV4 only offers a four-cylinder engine but is more attractive than ever before--and like the Rogue, it offers a hybrid version that's arguably better than the base vehicle.

The Mazda CX-5 offers excellent driving dynamics, but isn't very quick.

(A new CX-5 arrives for the 2017 model year.) The Hyundai Santa Fe Sport offers good looks and better performance from its turbocharged model.

The Ford Escape has good driving dynamics, extra power, and more technology than anything else in the segment--but like the Rogue, its crash-test scores suffer in comparison.

Finally, a new Honda CR-V arrives for the 2017 model year, with best-in-class packaging and a more cohesive look.

Quick Specs
6.8
The 2017 Nissan Rogue could beat the world of compact crossover SUVs, were it not for mediocre performance and safety ratings.
6.3
The 2017 Ford Escape foregoes a bit of utility in the name of style and sportiness, making it one of the better crossovers to drive.
7.8
It's hard to imagine a compact crossover better aligned with the needs of most buyers than the 2017 Honda CR-V.
7.3
There's a RAV4 for just about everyone, and while we applaud Toyota for adding more safety technology for 2017, the competition is worth a good look, too.
8.0
The 2016 Mazda CX-5 is one of the more athletic crossovers; high gas mileage and high style just add to the value.
