Nearly all the vehicles in this class offer very respectable safety features and comfortable interiors that are good enough for the needs of a small family, or for people who need a little more space to haul ‘stuff.’ The Chevrolet Equinox has been freshly redesigned, with a more fuel-efficient base four-cylinder engine and much-improved interior appointments.

Meanwhile, the Honda CR-V is a sales leader, with a very roomy, almost minivan-like interior—though the styling is definitely not universally appealing.

The Toyota RAV4 is one of few vehicles in this class to offer a third-row seat, though it’s barely even usable for kids.

The Subaru Forester was redesigned for 2009, for better comfort and refinement, and it offers standard all-wheel drive at a very competitive price.

Quick Specs
The 2011 Nissan Rogue has a good feature set and great packaging for small-family use, but its performance and details aren't always delightful.
If you don’t need a third row, the 2011 Chevrolet Equinox is just right for small families; it’s refined, secure, and versatile, and gets very impressive fuel economy in four-cylinder form.
The 2011 Honda CR-V is homely, as well as unexciting to drive; yet it's a great minivan alternative on many counts—appealing to practical shoppers with a roomy, versatile interior and top safety ratings.
The roomy, versatile 2011 Subaru Forester handles better than just about any other small crossover, though the need for a more modern transmission and a little more cabin refinement keep it from greatness.
Don't let appearances mislead; the 2011 Toyota RAV4 is a modern, practical crossover choice and great for frugal families.
