The 2014 Nissan Pathfinder expands its footprint in the heart of the family market, adding a hybrid model to last year's seven-seat, family-friendly crossover utility vehicle.
The old, brawny, rock-climbing Pathfinder is gone, but families will find this a very competitive suburban family transport.
Compared to the Dodge Durango or the Chevrolet Traverse (or the Traverse's siblings, the GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave), the Pathfinder weighs hundreds of pounds less--and you can feel it from the driver's seat.
On the other hand, both the Dodge and those large GM crossovers offer more comfortable seating all around—especially in the second row, compared to the Pathfinder.
The Ford Explorer may pose the toughest competition to the Pathfinder, though it doesn't have a hybrid offering as the Pathfinder and Highlander do.
The Explorer is refined, handles well, and offers more safety technology.
Both the Honda Pilot and the Toyota Highlander, however, lose out to the longer Pathfinder on seating and interior space.
