2016 Mitsubishi Outlander vs. Its Competition

2016 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport
Bengt Halvorson Bengt Halvorson Senior Editor

The Mitsubishi Outlander isn't the performer you'll find the Mazda CX-5 or Ford Escapeā€”but those crossover SUVs are all both slightly smaller and less versatile.

The Mitsu is a more direct rival to the likes of the Toyota RAV4, Hyundai Santa Fe Sport, and Honda CR-V, and the availability of a third row gives it an edge for big families.

We'd also consider the Dodge Journey with its third-row option, as well as its optional V-6.

There's also the Chevrolet Equinox, which feels extra spacious if you're not looking for a third row.

The Equinox gets a mild refresh for 2016.

And for those who really would like better fuel-efficiency, there's the upcoming 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid.

The 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander takes the rational road, filling in more functional details than flair, and it adds up to high-value family appeal.
7.8
The 2016 Chevrolet Equinox has one of the most spacious, quiet, and versatile interiors among smaller crossovers, and it loads on the value.
7.4
The 2016 Dodge Journey is a strong value among crossover SUVs, but it misses the mark for the tech-savvy and safety-conscious.
8.4
The 2016 Subaru Forester continues to be a good value and one of the best small SUVs you can buy, with superb all-weather capability, safety ratings, and versatility.
7.6
The 2016 Toyota RAV4 is a competent crossover utility with a new Hybrid model this year, updated safety systems, and lots of interior space.
7.8
The 2015 Honda CR-V is neither sporty nor particularly quick, but fuel efficiency is excellent and it prioritizes interior space, earnest practicality, and cleverly chosen features in a way that buyers appear to crave.
