There's fierce competition in the compact crossover segment.
Mercedes' traditional rivals, Audi and BMW, both have excellent small crossovers.
The Q5, in particular, has just been redesigned and features an impressive technology suite and a terrific ride-and-handling compromise.
The BMW X3, meanwhile, is starting to feel a little dated but still offers a roomy interior and great engines.
Volvo's XC60 is up for a redesign soon, but the old model is aging well and it makes a compelling value.
Land Rover's Discovery Sport even features a third row of seats—although we wouldn't recommend sitting back there for long.
And don't discount the Lincoln MKC, which is based on the Ford Escape but feels suitably upscale in almost every respect.

The Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class makes a terrific combination of the features and practical needs most buyers want in an attractive package. |
The Audi Q5 is certainly the segment's most modern offering, delivering a high degree of technology, comfort, and conservative style. |
The 2017 BMW X3 continues its run as one of the best compact luxury SUVs on the market—even in the face of much newer competition. |
Although it's not a working implement like the classic Land Rover Discovery, the quirky Discovery Sport has plenty of merits up against rivals in the entry-level luxury class. |
The 2017 MKC is a step in the right direction for Lincoln, thanks to controlled handling and interior luxury, but it lacks rear seat space and the cachet of its luxury rivals. |
The 2017 Volvo XC60 is a near-luxury contender at near-luxury prices. Its safety might be its biggest strong suit, which it rightly deserves. |
