The G-Wagen is not a vehicle one cross-shops for deals and features: you either very badly want it or you very much don’t.

But there are some competing vehicles that do have a fine balance of luxury and off-roadability. The newest of these—and probably most threatening—is the Land Rover Defender.

The iconic name has been revived for America after a 20-plus year hiatus.

It has the boxy, retro look, the absolute capability, and plenty of available luxury features.

What’s it missing? The performance piece of the puzzle.

Don’t expect 500-plus horses in this Land Rover. But the Range Rover? Oh yes.

It’s available with a number of powertrains, including a 5.0-liter supercharged V-8 that pumps out 557 horsepower.

It is fast, off-road capable, and supremely luxurious.

For better or for worse, it also lacks the in-your-face panache of the G-Wagen. Over in the Japanese corner, the Lexus LX is the big, hulking SUV with good off-road chops.

It doesn’t look much tonier than the Toyota Land Cruiser from which it's based, but both will go anywhere with a quieter, more reserved persona. And yes, we tossed the Navigator into this ring of contenders as well.

Why? Because it’s the original American image SUV.

It won’t go far into the wilderness but it has a road presence that few can deny.

Quick Specs
The 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class may not look different than its predecessor, but its new suspension and interior bring it into the 21st century. Finally.
The Range Rover may have lost the crown of "most expensive SUV" to Bentley or Rolls-Royce, but it still sets the bar for style and class.
The 2020 Land Rover Defender is a return to the U.S. for the boxy off-roader that helped start it all. This time with far more creature comforts.
The 2020 Lexus LX 570 disguises its truck-based roots well with brash lines balanced by a calming interior, but be prepared for prodigious thirst.
The 2020 Lincoln Navigator makes a massive statements with its style, its power and its exceptional interior.
The 2020 Toyota Land Cruiser is a bruiser with few luxuries for the money, but we love it anyway.
