If you want to go off road in style, the Land Rover Range Rover is the G-Class' closest rival.

But the Range Rover is much larger, not to mention a lot more modern.

The same is true for the Toyota Land Cruiser and its more decadent sibling, the Lexus LX 570.

Both models will crawl up just about any mountain, but they don't offer nearly the range of powertrains seen in the G-Class.

Quick Specs
A Mercedes-Benz G-Class isn't a logical buy, but that's just why it has endured so long. Not everyone wants an economical sedan, after all.
Few vehicles match the 2017 Range Rover's luxury and performance on pavement; fewer still can keep up with it when the pavement ends.
A legend in its own time, the Toyota Land Cruiser is as much a throwback to the past as it is a showcase for Toyota's engineering prowess.
