2020 Mazda MX-5 Miata vs. Its Competition

The Miata isn’t the only choice for fun on a budget.

The Fiat 124 Spider, for instance, is a largely-identical, slightly-pricier Miata utilizing the same chassis but with its own turbo engine built by Fiat parent FCA.

It’s the better option if you’re looking for a boulevard cruiser; the Miata remains the enthusiast’s choice.

The Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ are another pair of twins that appeal to the budget-conscious.

These are priced right about in line with the Miata and come only as hardtop coupes.

They have more space and are more usable all year round, but their boxer 4-cylinder engine isn’t quite as fun-spirited as the Miata’s mill. If budget isn’t a concern, the BMW Z4 and Toyota Supra are yet another pair of similar-but-different cars to pick from.

Both share a chassis and motor that’s built by BMW, but the Toyota gets brand-exclusive tuning and styling.

Further differentiating the two are their body styles: the Z4 is strictly a convertible; the Supra, a coupe.

Both are bigger, more powerful, and quicker than the Miata.

They also cost about double the Mazda.
