2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata vs. Its Competition

The MX-5 Miata does what a sports car should: deliver fun behind the wheel.

The reason for that isn’t big power or high tech.

Instead, it’s light weight.

The Fiat 124 Spider is a virtual clone of the Miata, with a different engine that has less immediate power but more mid-range grunt.

Non V-8 versions of the Ford Mustang keep the price down, but the Mustang is a larger, heavier car without the strict sports car intent of the Miata.

The Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ do adhere to the Miata’s lightweight philosophy, and for those who have always wanted a Miata coupe, they can be viewed as filling that void, unless the Miata RF does that for you.

The Mini Cooper convertible may have front-wheel instead of rear-wheel drive, but it also delivers stylish looks and a fun-to-drive character.
