2021 Mazda CX-30 vs. Its Competition

The 2021 Mazda CX-30 is ready for city people with a small parking space but kids or gear to speed off with on the weekends, and it lands in a class with some very different interpretations of that.

The Crosstrek is the most off-road ready, with standard all-wheel drive and a lot of toughness built in—and a new turbo engine—but it’s lacking in refinement.

The Ford Ecosport feels like an old-style economy car, just one with a tall roof.

The Chevy Trax falls into the rental-car department; it’s just adequate.

Honda’s HR-V isn’t much fun to drive, and lacks rear head room.

The Hyundai Venue is new and spacious, but front-wheel drive only.

And the Nissan Kicks is also front-wheel drive only, and rather sluggish, though the rest of the package is compelling.

6.0
The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek flexes a more potent available powertrain but still prioritizes safety and capability.
