There aren't many vehicles left on the market that do what the GX 460 does--with true truck-based underpinnings and mid-size dimensions.
With its adjustable suspension and KDSS, the GX does handle off-roading without making sacrifices in highway ride quality, and it's among the better vehicles for that.
But the Audi Q7 or Mercedes-Benz GL Class (which was just redesigned) both are more confident and comfortable, with the Audi boasting an especially attractive interior.
With their available clean-diesel engines, the GL-Class, Q7, and Touareg are all far more fuel-efficient yet great for towing.
The VW Touareg is slightly more off-road-oriented, and doesn't offer a third-row seat, but it's otherwise a stout, impressive vehicle.
Another good option is the Jeep Grand Cherokee, which has top-notch performance and refinement, at a much lower price than the Lexus, especially for the Jeep's good V-6 version.
In each case, these vehicles have a more versatile layout and more cargo space (as well as easier loading) than the GX and its wrong-side-opening hatch.
