The mid-size Lexus GS stakes a claim to some of the mid-size luxury market occupied by some of the most popular and prestigious cars in the world.
We love the Benz diesel sedans and the AMG E63, and their newly settled styling language; BMW's turbo sixes are swell, and the M5 is dazzling with its rev-matching manual.
The Audi A6 is fine, though we prefer its sleeker hatchback A7 cousin; the front- or all-wheel-drive sedan can be had with a supercharged V-6 and tech wonders like Google Earth mapping and S-line sport trim.
The Cadillac CTS gets the nod for distinctive American styling and a lineup that includes sedan, coupe, and wagon, as well as the power-crazy V-Series; the new sedan for 2014 improves rear-seat room and interior quality.
Finally, the renamed Infiniti Q70 may be the GS' most direct challenger: it has great handling, a charming fluid style and rippling V-6 power, but some coarse drivetrain noises and less badge equity than some other brands.

Brilliance takes many forms in the Audi A6: the diesel-driven TDI, the supercharged A6, or the turbocharged S6 all stand out in ways the sedate body doesn't quite match. |
The 2014 BMW 5-Series is simultaneously a classic sport sedan and a technology-packed grand tourer. |
The 2014 Cadillac CTS sedan scales up the ATS' handsome profile and spot-on handling, and tops it off with a winning Vsport edition. |
The 2014 Infiniti Q70 sedan range is fast, fun-to-drive, better to look at, and comfortable--a world-class combination. |
What, me worry? The Mercedes-Benz E-Class reasserts its alpha status with a tighter forehead, a greener turbodiesel, and a pair of all-wheel-drive AMGs. |
