2017 Lexus ES vs. Its Competition

2017 Lexus ES
Andrew Ganz Andrew Ganz Senior Editor

Straddling the line between full-on luxury and more accessible entry-luxe, the Lexus ES goes up against a diverse group of rivals.

Acura's RLX flies under the radar but is actually a high-tech sedan worth comparing to the ES 350 and especially the ES 300h.

New for 2017, both the Buick LaCrosse and Kia Cadenza come from automakers not associated with Lexus-level luxury, but the two cars offer a solid value-oriented alternative to the ES range.

Lincoln's MKZ starts off as a Ford Fusion, much like the ES can trace its roots to the Toyota Avalon, but it piles on the luxuries—albeit not nearly as convincingly as the Lexus.

And if your budget can stretch to it, the gorgeous Volvo S90 undercuts its BMW and Mercedes-Benz rivals while still offering a truly upscale approach.

Quick Specs
7.5
If it's cosseting luxury and a roomy interior you're after, the Lexus ES may be the car for you.
6.5
If the Acura RLX's weak sales figures are anything to go by, its subtlety is lost on most consumers.
7.2
An excellent chassis and a nice interior mean the LaCrosse should be on your shopping list. At the low end, it represents an excellent value and should be on any full-size sedan buyer's shopping list.
7.5
The 2017 Kia Cadenza edges closer to the true luxury car it wants to be, thanks to big advances in refinement.
8.0
The 2017 Volvo S90 gets all the elegance and style of the brilliant new XC90 crossover, in a sedan package.
