For its first five years on the market, the 2016 Lexus CT 200h had no direct competitors; it was the sole compact luxury hybrid hatchback.
That'll change when the Audi A3 Sportback e-tron arrives, but that's a plug-in hybrid and will likely appeal to a much more tech-forward crowd than the littlest Lexus.
Its closest direct competitor may be the Mercedes-Benz GLA Class, which is marketed as a small crossover utility vehicle but is really a hatchback in shape, capacity, and character.
The Ford C-Max Hybrid is a tall compact five-door hatchback, but despite its nice interior, it's no more than slightly luxurious even in its highest trims.
On the sportier side are the Mazda 3, which has even less room in the rear than the CT does (the new Mazda CX-3 solves that problem, though) and the Volkswagen Golf GTI, always a blast to drive and now larger inside than the CT, but with much lower fuel economy.
