2013 Lexus CT 200h vs. Its Competition

The 2013 Lexus CT 200h is a totally different car to the Toyota Prius whose powertrain it shares.

Its 42-mpg combined gas mileage comes with far more luxury, and it's a lot more fun to drive.

High-end Prius models include some of the same features--and they're roomier--but the Lexus luxury brand sets the CT apart.

It competes more directly with the Audi A3, now at the end of its model life, especially with the high-efficiency A3 TDI diesel model.

There's also the new SkyActiv engine in the Mazda3, which delivers consistent real-world mileage in the mid- to high 30s.

Both of those cars offer sportier, crisper handling.

The Volkswagen GTI is pure hot hatch, without the luxury fittings or image, and a new competitor may be the high-end models of the Ford C-Max Hybrid.

It's rated at 47 mpg--higher than the CT--and has more room inside, a healthy set of standard and optional features, and handling that's the equal of the little Lexus.

Quick Specs
The 2013 Lexus CT 200h remains the only compact luxury hybrid hatchback, and it's more stylish, fun, and economical than that blend might indicate. It's got (mostly) Lexus levels of luxury and refinement, with a fun Sport mode and a combination of good value and great fuel economy.
The 2013 Audi A3 wears its age well, and remains a sporty, versatile choice for compact hatchback buyers who can afford a little luxury.
The 2013 Ford C-Max Hybrid is the first head-to-head challenger for the Toyota Prius since that car grabbed the green mantle a decade ago--and in many ways, the Ford's a better daily driver.
The 2013 Mazda 3 drives with a lot more sophistication and verve than you might expect for a small car this affordable, practical, and fuel-efficient.
The 2012 Lexus HS 250h offers lots of technology along with its high gas mileage, but it's not engaging to drive, nor is its level of luxury particularly spectacular.
