As to what you see as the LR4's top rival, it depends how you plan to use the LR4.

If what you want is a gussied-up body-on-frame SUV, the Lexus GX 460 might actually work quite well.

The Lexus doesn't ride as well, and we don't think it handles as well either, but there's a lot of appeal in its boutique interior.

In terms of pricing and luxury cachet, the Audi Q7 might be one of the LR4's closest rivals.

Although the Audi is a different kind of vehicle entirely, with a sleek, low, and modern profile, a more accessible third row, and very little emphasis on off-road ability.

The ercedes-Benz' GLE-Class can be a more efficient alternative with the GLE350 Bluetec diesel, and it offers a well-executed, refined interior.

The Volkswagen Touareg is perhaps a middle ground between these alternatives, with more off-road capability than the Q7 (though its badge is far more modest), while the Porsche Cayenne turns its focus more to the road and high performance.

Quick Specs
One of the few true SUVs left on the market, the 2016 Land Rover LR4 offers uncompromised off-road ability at the cost of on-road handling and fuel economy.
The M-Class gets a new lease on luxury-crossover life as the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class—and it's joined by a swoopy new Coupe variant.
The 2016 Porsche Cayenne offers more than enough on-the-road (or on-the-track) performance to satisfy enthusiast cravings, and it's likely to surprise and delight with its versatility and ruggedness.
Expensive and fancy for a vehicle from a mainstream brand, the 2016 Volkswagen Touareg is also less expensive than some comparable luxury-SUV options.
