As to what you see as the LR4's top rival, it depends how you plan to use the LR4.
If what you want is a gussied-up body-on-frame SUV, the Lexus GX 460 might actually work quite well.
The Lexus doesn't ride as well, and we don't think it handles as well either, but there's a lot of appeal in its boutique interior -- at least for some.
In terms of pricing and luxury cachet, the Audi Q7 might be one of the LR4's closest rivals.
Although the Audi is a different king of vehicle entirely, with a sleek, low, and modern profile, and very little emphasis on off-road ability, but a more accessible third row.
Mercedes-Benz's M Class can be a more efficient alternative with the ML350 Bluetec diesel, and it offers a well-executed, refined interior.
The Volkswagen Touareg is perhaps a middle ground between these alternatives, with more off-road capability than the Q7 (although its badge is far more modest), while the Porsche Cayenne turns its focus more to the road and high performance.

The 2015 Land Rover LR4 is one of the few true SUVs left on the market; you'll value that if you're willing to trade off a little on-road nimbleness for uncompromised trail ability and top-notch interior comfort. |
Though the 2015 Audi Q7 might show a little of its age, there are so few faults here that it's hard not to love this big SUV. |
The 2015 Mercedes-Benz ML-Class doesn't crow about off-roading: it's more concerned with things like fuel economy and in the AMG, superhero acceleration. |
The 2015 Porsche Cayenne is no longer the only blasphemous off-roader in the Porsche family; this year, it gets improved powertrains and massaged looks in a familiar package. |
The 2015 Volkswagen Touareg is expensive and fancy for a VW, but less expensive than some comparable luxury-SUV options. |
