2017 Land Rover Discovery vs. Its Competition

The new Discovery puts a heavier emphasis on family utility in this new generation; as such, it's a natural rival for the German utes and a couple of outliers.

The Audi Q7 has some of the best dynamics and best technology in its class, though it's not as hardcore about off-roading as Land Rover.

The same is true for the BMW and Mercedes utes, which also offer diesel power, though to get seven seats in a Mercedes SUV, you'll need to move up to the GLS-Class.

Volvo's XC90 is as serene a crossover as we've ever come across, but it lacks some of the polish seen in established German rivals.

Finally, the Lexus GX takes the Toyota 4Runner's off-road hardware and adds even more technology assists, but it's clumsy on the road and expensive, despite its age.
