2018 Kia Sportage vs. Its Competition

Compact crossovers are all the rage, so make sure you’ve allotted plenty of time to test-drive them all.

The Sportage is a not-all-that-distant cousin of the Hyundai Tucson, and there’s a lot to like about both.

Mazda’s CX-5 is the most polished performer in this class, even if it’s down on power and can get pricey with options.

The Toyota RAV4 is hugely popular with consumers and is certainly worth a look, even if doesn’t really excel in any particular way.

We love the way the Ford Escape drives and its optional 2.0-liter turbo-4 engine matches the Sportage’s performance.

Finally, the Subaru Forester is starting to gray at its temples, but it still does so many things right—visibility, practicality, and fuel economy are all top notch.
