2016 Kia Soul vs. Its Competition

What used to be the closest rival to the Kia Soul, the Nissan Cube, has been discontinued, and that leaves a set of vehicles that look quite different than the Soul and each have a different way of juggling priorities.

The Fiat 500L might be the closest at this point; it's a larger, roomier, and somewhat boxier tall hatchback (or wagon, depending on how you see it) that offers great interior space, although we don’t think highly of the seats, and performance is good but not at all sporty.

The MINI Countryman is considerably more expensive than the Soul, and it has just a bit of ruggedness baked in, but its interior verges on gimmicky and its choppy ride can be hard to live with in Rust Belt cities.

The Hyundai Veloster takes an opposite tack on the box-on-wheels look, and attempts to pack more versatility into a sport-coupe look—mostly succeeding.

The Jeep Renegade is a solid new entry that aims to be a little more rugged; some will prefer its taller driving position and excellent interior design.

And then there's the Honda HR-V, which is based on the Honda Fit but a little more stylish and swoopy—albeit giving up some space efficiency in the process.

Quick Specs
8.6
The affordable, practical 2016 Kia Soul has a boxy style that fits right into urban environments, yet fits a lot inside.
7.8
The 2016 Honda HR-V smartly trades a little of the Fit's fuel economy for exuberant styling, more headroom, and optional all-wheel drive.
7.8
The 2016 Hyundai Veloster is a tough one to classify, but it is what it appears: part sports coupe, part sensible hot hatch, and a lot of quirky.
7.6
The 2016 Jeep Renegade has something to please both off-roaders and commuters, but its performance can seem dull compared to its engaging styling.
8.0
The mildly updated 2015 MINI Countryman is a versatile compact crossover, one of the smallest on the market, that maintains MINI's character and fun-to-drive spirit.
7.0
Tall wagons aren't a thing here, yet, but the 2015 Fiat 500L gives us one more reason to ask, why not?
