2022 Kia Niro EV vs. Its Competition

The set of affordable electric vehicles is expanding rapidly—especially in the Niro EV’s tall-hatchback, crossover-lite cohort.

Ahead of the arrival of a $40,000 base version of the Nissan Ariya, the Nissan Leaf Plus is a strong rival for the money, with up to 226 miles of range and faster 100-kw fast charging.

Both Nissan and Chevy dropped prices last year, with the Chevrolet Bolt EV also offering about as much range for a lot less money.

The Hyundai Kona Electric has a 258-mile range and has better ride-and-handling behavior than the Niro EV, but it’s a half-size smaller.

The Volkswagen ID.4 will offers loads of interior space, a great ride, and good handling, although its tech hiccups let down the execution.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is another new entry; due to start well below $40,000, it offers a lot more style and personality than Hyundai’s previous EV entries, without giving anything up.
