The Jeep Wrangler has a storied history and a reputation for ruggedness, and that's drawn some competition over the years.
Its two main rivals today are the Toyota 4Runner and Nissan Xterra.
Neither matches the Jeep's removable tops or available two-door model, but they both can tackle tough trails when properly equipped.
The Nissan Xterra has a rugged look, and serious off-road versions tough enough for boulder-scrambling, but ultimately it's not as entirely dedicated to the task as the Wrangler.
The 4Runner is more of a conventional SUV, but it hasn't given up its tough truck side in recent years and when properly equipped it could make a softer alternative to the Wrangler Unlimited.
Toyota has added a TRD off-road pack for the 2015 4Runner, which includes suspension upgrades and a sorely needed all-terrain tire package.
The Toyota FJ Cruiser, a 4Runner offshoot and close relative, is gone from the market as of 2015.
