2017 Jeep Renegade vs. Its Competition

2017 Jeep Renegade

The Jeep Renegade is clearly the most rugged vehicle in a growing segment that includes a variety of "soft-roaders" with far less genuine off-road capability.

Its only equal there may be the larger Subaru Crosstrek, derived from an Impreza hatchback but with added ground clearance, some styling add-ons, and a startling amount of off-road grip and poise.

The popular Honda HR-V and the sporty, low-slung Mazda CX-3 probably reach their limits on muddy soccer fields or gravel roads.

The Honda has class-leading fuel economy, along with excellent space usage and ride quality, while the Mazda has attractive lines and crisp road manners.

The Chevy Trax is restyled and gets some new features for 2017, and while it's upright and functional, it lacks the Jeep cachet.

Finally, the Mini Cooper Countryman emphasizes style over function, and the new version that's imminent will likely get larger yet, although also more fuel-efficient.

Quick Specs
The 2017 Jeep Renegade is the smallest Jeep you can buy, appealing both to commuters and off-roaders, but its design can outshine its performance.
The 2017 Chevrolet Trax may lack power and style, but it's a smart package for city dwellers thanks to a useful hatchback shape, thrifty fuel economy, and a low price.
Think of the 2017 Honda HR-V as a Fit with all-wheel drive and a little more headroom. It's not as fun as it could be, but it makes a lot of sense.
The 2017 Mazda CX-3 keeps the most attractive features from last year: its price and its handling.
The 2017 Subaru Outback is an extremely versatile, rugged, compact SUV that's relatively efficient compared to other crossovers.
It may be less mini than before, but the Mini Countryman now does a much better job of feeling like a proper crossover.
