The Jeep Grand Cherokee is, as it's always been, part rugged SUV and part comfortable family vehicle.
What's new about the current-generation Grand Cherokee is how this model has deftly entered the luxury realm, competing against some models with pedigreed luxury badges.
For instance, the Land Rover LR4 is the Grand Cherokee's equal in capability, if not all-out luxury; but the Land Rover is priced higher and doesn't allow as many powertrain choices.
The Ford Explorer has sharp-steering, and it's a quick-footed way to tote up to seven passengers, but it's bigger and car-based with no more off-road cred.
The Volkswagen Touareg has a nice interior, although it lacks many of the Jeep's features and has shed some of its off-road gear in recent years.
For the crossover crowd that doesn't care so much about off-roading, the Grand Cherokee's rivals could include the Chevy Traverse or Equinox.
Yet we think the Subaru Outback is closest to its temperament and its utility.

The 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a lot more than first appearances might suggest: a true luxury vehicle, a capable off-roader, and a fuel-efficient diesel highway hauler—potentially all in the same build. |
The 2016 Chevy Traverse is a smooth and comfortable alternative to the minivan or full-size SUV. |
The 2016 Ford Explorer doesn't need to rely on hardcore off-road tools--not with its firm road manners, plush interiors, and choice of turbocharged power. |
One of the few true SUVs left on the market, the 2016 Land Rover LR4 offers uncompromised off-road ability at the cost of on-road handling and fuel economy. |
Tough, go-anywhere capability can go together with a streamlined wagon design, class-leading safety, and a comfortable ride: The 2016 Subaru Outback is a conceptual mashup that's better than the sum of its parts. |
Expensive and fancy for a vehicle from a mainstream brand, the 2016 Volkswagen Touareg is also less expensive than some comparable luxury-SUV options. |
