The Jeep Compass is an economical alternative to larger crossover models—as well as small sedans—and it's one of the few small crossovers to offer the option of serious off-road ability.
Most rivals tend to either take a sportier direction or one that's a little more rugged, like the Compass.
The Nissan Juke is perhaps the sportiest, yet the least practical.
At the sporty side of this group is the Nissan Juke; it offers more inspiring styling and a versatile interior, although its ride can be harsh and it doesn’t offer much if any off-road capability.
The Hyundai Tucson has been revamped this year into a somewhat more refined, substantial-feeling vehicle.
Meanwhile, the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport has some of the same issues as the Compass (it's actually related); it has a somewhat better-designed interior and a comfortable ride, although engine and road noise can be turnoffs.
The Subaru XV Crosstrek is a more carlike vehicle, but it’s surprisingly tough and fuel-efficient and has a reputation for safety; you can, as with the Compass, get a manual transmission, yet it has some of the same issues with refinement and engine noise.

The 2016 Mini Counryman retains a fair amount of the Mini character and fun-to-drive spirit, but a growing crop of small crossovers give it more competition than ever. |
