The Jaguar XF hits its middle-age stride with a range of powertrains and a new wagon body style.
It’s on par now with the Benz E-Class and BMW 5-Series on those terms.
We think the Benz E63 S may be the most perfect single model on sale anywhere, but we’re biased by V-8 power and a huge cargo hold.
BMW’s 5-Series has found some of its old footing, and the new M5 is a ferocious four-door.
The Cadillac CTS still gets our nod, especially in VSport trim, with lascivious power and a sedate shape lit up by LEDs in Le Mans style.
For contrast, take the Lincoln Continental: it’s a big front- or all-wheel drive sedan with all the chrome and buoyant trim left off this generation of Jaguars, and it’s detailed down to a nearly microscopic level.
It’s an echo of what Jaguar might have been if it stayed in Ford’s hands.

The 2018 Jaguar XF lives its best life in Sportbrake form; the turbo-4 emerges here in untested form. |
The 2018 Audi S6 stands with an impressive hand: quality interior, great performance, functional shape. It's possible to find better examples from other cars, but they all cost significantly more. |
The 2018 BMW 5-Series expands the sedan's already-excellent lineup to include an efficient plug-in hybrid and an uber-quick V-8. |
The 2018 Cadillac CTS-V scorches the earth, and leaves the E63 and RS7 with some burn marks. |
We’re not fans of mismatches, but the 2018 Lincoln Continental’s lithe road manners and retro theming pair awfully well. |
The 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class goes to excess--the right kinds of excess--to preserve its best-of status. |
