2013 Jaguar XF vs. Its Competition

2013 Jaguar XF
Martin Padgett Martin Padgett Editorial Director

The Jaguar XF slipped silently into a class of sedans that include some of the world's benchmarks for luxury and performance.

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class gets a streamlined new look this year, and it's one of the few vehicles anywhere that offers the trio of powertrains: diesel, hybrid, and gas.

It's also sold as a coupe and cabriolet, and hyper-performing AMG editions.

The BMW 5-Series offers turbocharged V-8 performance and pretty impressive handling, though it's grown a little bloated in size and techno features.

The Audi A6 and A7 were new for 2012 and mechanically are quite closely related--but who doesn't prefer the A7's gorgeous styling? One final alternative is the Infiniti M56; it offers an athleticism that rivals that of the XF, but you'll have to deal with less interior glitz and more badge envy.

Quick Specs
Refined, nimble, and a scorcher in R trim, the Jaguar XF's only remaining hurdle to greatness is back-seat space.
Traditional looks disguise this Audi's brilliance: it's a blast to drive in either 3.0T trim or S6 spec.
The 2013 Audi A7 and S7 are design standouts, refined performers, and more exciting, practical alternatives to sedans.
The 2013 BMW 5-Series packs in the advanced technology and fuel-efficient powertrains, yet it manages to keep true to its sport-sedan mission.
With sharp handling, scorching performance, and decent comfort, the 2013 Infiniti M sedans are bold and beautiful but not overwrought.
Better handling and interiors put the Mercedes-Benz E-Class back in benchmark status; a passel of new engines brings fuel economy to new heights.
