2014 Hyundai Sonata vs. Its Competition

2014 Hyundai Sonata

The 2014 Sonata competes in a very tough segment with two of the best selling passenger cars, the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord.

The Accord remains very much a Honda in driving feel, even though it's quite a large vehicle now.

The Camry was revamped for last year, with improved fuel economy and marginally better refinement; but it remains surprisingly conservative.

The Mazda6 has excellent road manners, making up some for slightly smaller rear-seat space; and last year's redesign brought much improved fuel economy refinement.

The Fusion remains one of the boldest designs on the market, and with several different turbocharged engines and a Fusion Hybrid, it's the lineup with the most choice.

The Kia Optima, which is closely related to the Hyundai Sonata, also deserves a look; it's almost identical to the Sonata in powertrain and layout, but it somehow handles better, and its sleeker, Euro-influenced styling aims for a very different crowd.

Quick Specs
The 2014 Hyundai Sonata remains one of the best buys among mid-size sedans--although with so many much-improved rival models, it's no longer such a standout.
The 2014 Ford Fusion has stunning good looks, satisfying performance, and top-notch safety and fuel economy--all without skimping on the interior space and ride comfort that really means something to mid-size sedan shoppers.
The 2014 Kia Optima is a sensible and spacious four-door sedan, but it moonlights as something a little more stylish and adventuresome.
The 2014 Mazda 6 is a beauty, with refined, perky powertrains and a driving experience that mostly delivers on what the exterior suggests.
The 2014 Toyota Camry may not be as attractive as some of its competitors, but it's now more than ever the most sensible choice for shoppers focused on value, frugality and comfort above all else.
